Spay-Neuter Inclement Weather Policy

If the Baltimore County Public Schools are closed due to inclement weather, the Spay-Neuter Center will also be closed.  We will call you to reschedule your pet’s surgery appointment. If the schools are only delayed, the surgical center will operate on its regular 8am-4pm schedule. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.

Not every pet is a good surgical candidate for the Humane Society Spay/Neuter Center; some pets are better served by being seen in a full-service veterinary facility. Please confirm that your pets meet the following criteria prior to scheduling a sugical appointment with us.

For Dogs:

  • Between 4 months and 7 years of age
  • Female Weight - Must be between 5 and 60 pounds
  • Male Weight - Must be between 5 and 80 pounds
  • No known illness, injury or medical condition that may increase surgical risk
  • Not belonging to brachycephalic (short-faced) breed, due to greater anesthetic risk
  • Not aggressive toward people or highly aggressive toward other animals

    For Cats:

    • Between 3 months and 7 years of age
    • Weighs more than 3 pounds
    • No known illness, injury or medical condition that may increase surgical risk
    • Not belonging to either the hairless or Persian breeds

      Medical History Requirements

      For Dogs:

      • Vaccines -- Current distemper and Rabies. Dog owners seeking a waiver from required vaccinations must present a valid veterinary record or veterinary receipts showing that your dog has received an appropriate up-to-date 'distemper series' consisting of at least two DHPP vaccines given 14 - 28 days apart and a rabies vaccine by a licensed veterinarian.
      • Heartworm Testing -- If your dog is older than 6 months of age, you must present proof that he/she is free of heartworm disease or our veterinarian will test for heartworms prior to surgery for a cost of $20. A receipt for purchase of heartworm preventative or your dog's box of heartworm preventative are acceptable proof of preventive care.

      For Cats:

      • Vaccines -- Current FVRCP and Rabies. Cat owners seeking a waiver from required vaccinations must present a valid veterinary record or veterinary receipts showing that your cat has received an appropriate up-to-date 'distemper series' consisting of at least two FVRCP vaccines given 14-28 days apart  and a rabies vaccine by a licensed veterinarian.
        • FeLV/FIV Testing -- All cats must be tested for feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) within 2 months prior to surgery. Cat owners must present a valid shot record showing the results of the test or our veterinarian will test your cat at time of surgery for a cost of $20.
Pets with any medical conditions, injuries or illness will be declined for surgery and referred to a full-service veterinary hospital. Pets ages 5-7 will require pre-anesthetic blood work for a fee of $45.
